Tourist Attractions In Milwaukee
Milwaukee is the biggest city in the state of Wisconsin, and the 22nd largest city population wise, in the United States. Milwaukee used to be known mainly for its beer and manufacturing, but in recent years, the city has added new additions to change its image. This includes Milwaukee Riverwalk, Miller Park, and the Midwest Airlines Center. Also added was the internationally renowned Milwaukee Art Museum. Besides the tourist attractions, Milwaukee has added new skyscrapers, condos, and apartments near Lake Michigan which attracts new residents to the area. These new residents will quickly learn that Milwaukee offers many fun things to do for your whole family.
If visiting Milwaukee in the summer, be sure to attend Milwaukee's Summerfest, which is also known as "The Big Gig". This is a yearly festival held by the shores of Lake Michigan. Summerfest lasts 11 days, which includes the 4th of July. It is known as the world's largest music festival. You will find many stages with performers that are local, and nationally known. The festival allows you to try a variety of foods from popular Milwaukee restaurants, and don't forget about the beer! Besides the food and music, Summerfest offers comedians, shopping areas, activities for children, and fireworks.
Summerfest is not the only festival that is popular in the summer by Lake Michigan. There is a variety of ethnic festivals that run each weekend. The festivals celebrate local ethnicity groups that live in Milwaukee. Each festival offers food, entertainment, and items for sale by the certain ethnic group. Some of the festivals include Polish Fest, Irish Fest, African World Festival, German Fest, Arab World Festival, and the most popular of them all, Fiesta Italiana. These festivals run until the beginning of September, with the last festival of the year being, Indian Summer, which celebrates Native American culture.
Some sights to see that are open all year round include the Milwaukee Art Museum and the Mitchell Park Domes. The Milwaukee Art Museum recently gained international recognition when the new white Quadracci Pavilion was designed by Santiago Calatrava. The structure includes a moveable wing-like sun-breaker that can open to 217 feet during the day. This building has become a symbol of Milwaukee. The galleries are available to view in the actual museum. Some of the galleries include old masters of important art, as well as some of the best German Expressionism art in the nation. The museum also offers a big collection of work by Georgia Totti O'Keeffe.
The Mitchell Park Domes is another hot spot in Milwaukee. It is a conservatory that consists of three beehive-shaped domes that are 85 feet high. Each dome maintains a different climate. There is an Arid Dome which displays a variety of plants from Africa and the Americas. Another dome is the Tropical Dome which contains over 1,000 species of plants. The third dome is known as the Show Dome. It offers four different themed shows a year, including a Christmas show. One of the popular shows is the garden railway.
Milwaukee is known as the "City of Festivals". It offers many fun things to do for the whole family. You can eat a brat and listen to a local Polka band, or discover and learn from the areas zoo and museums. There is always something to do in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. No matter what time of year it is, you will have a wonderful time visiting this beautiful city by Lake Michigan.
