Tips To Avoid Rocking The Boat With Seasickness
Some people just have all the luck. You plan for a cruise vacation but you don't plan on seasickness. If you have ever been prone to motion sickness, chances are that you just might be struck by seasickness on a cruise. Seasickness occurs when your brain and your inner ear don't quite communicate correctly in maintaining your balance. When this occurs, you can become nauseous. The good news is that it is not contagious or life-threatening. The bad news is that by the time you get your "sea legs" you could be almost through with your cruise!
To avoid spending most of your cruise time in bed, have a game plan ready in case you do get seasick. There is no reason not to choose a cruise vacation if that is what you always wanted to do. If it makes you feel any better, even the most experienced cruisers occasionally still get seasick. Consciously concentrating on seasickness, even with no symptoms, may actually bring it on. Therefore, do not dwell on it. Keep your eyes on the horizon and try to stay topside for as long as possible. Don't stare at objects or spend too much time below deck. These can bring on the seasick feeling.
Keep busy and breathe in the fresh air. Stay hydrated and nibble on mild snacks until you get your sea legs. You don't want to eat anything to heavy or spicy until you are comfortable aboard the ship. Take a nap on one of the many deck chairs out in the fresh air. Some people swear that when they wake up the seasick feeling is gone. It could be because your body adjusts to the movements of the ship while you are sleeping, thus bypassing the seasick feeling. Another tip is to choose a cabin with a window.
Sometimes, no matter what methods you try, your tummy still protests. Luckily, there are some other seasickness preventatives you can try so that you can enjoy your cruise. For instance, there are some over the counter medications you can try to combat the nauseous and tipsy feelings. Dramamine is the most known brand but there are others as well. Essentially, most of these medications are anti-histamines; therefore, if you are prone to drowsiness with them, you will want to look for the non-drowsy varieties.
You can also purchase a seasickness patch that will last several days into your trip. Most people by that time are comfortable and won't need them. However, they are easy to reapply if you don't want to chance it. Herbal remedies can be purchased as well. Ginger is most popular and you can buy it in several forms. First, there are ginger capsules that you can just swallow. You can also chew on fresh ginger as well. If you can find candied ginger pieces (most likely in an oriental foods store), these are often the most effective and best tasting. Wristbands that use acupressure practices have also been known to be effective against seasickness. Of all the seasickness remedies, this is the safest, especially for younger children.
As you can see, there are many options in regards to caring for seasickness. Don't let even the thought of it deter you from making plans for that cruise adventure.
