The Hamptons, located on Long Island, New York, has been the playground for the rich and famous for over a hundred years. This beautiful resort area has virtually everything – wonderful beaches, fine dining, exclusive shops and historic houses – all within several quaint villages that make up this upscale, holiday mecca.

The first thing you should do when visiting this village is to take a walking tour of the some the historic, colonial buildings in the village. Many of these buildings are listed in the National Historic Registry and date back to pre-colonial times. You can visit the Southhampton Chamber of Commerce to get a map that features the Southhampton Historical Museum and the Old Halsey Homestead – the oldest house in the state. The Old Halsey Homestead was occupied by English troops during the Revolutionary War.
Art enthusiasts will simply love the various art galleries that are scattered throughout this charming village. Art became a popular commodity in Southhampton around the turn of the 20th century when art patron William Merrit Chase founded what is now called the Art Village. Artists such as Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner, Willem de Kooning, Fairfield Porter, Roy Litchenstein and Larry Rivers had studios in this quaint, avante guarde community.
For shopping, visit the charming tree-lined street of Jobs Lane where there are retail stores, village antique shops, fine art galleries, and upscale clothing boutiques. Of the 200 stores and shops in Southhampton, you are certain to find just the right gift or present for yourself.
Golfing enthusiasts have a choice of three golf courses, in Southhampton, including the Shinnecock Golf Club which is the oldest private golf course in the United States. The challenging and picturesque golf course has been the host to a number of US Open tournaments, dating back to 1896.
Another point of interest that you will not want to miss while staying in this exclusive community is the Parrish Art Museum. Here you will see some of the best art from both local, national and international artists. Plays, shows, concerts and reading workshops can also be found at the close by Rogers Memorial Library, open to the public.
One event that draws crowds each year to this quaint community is the Shinnecock Indian Powwow, held each Labor Day. The Shinnecock Indians' reservation is located just outside of the Southhampton border and the powwow is open to the public. Young and old alike enjoy the experience of learning about Native American culture.
As for restaurants, you can find the best dining in Southhampton. From upscale, five star restaurants, to simple family fare, there is literally something to suit every taste in this wonderful village.
In the summer months, you must visit the pristine, unspoiled beaches of this community. Southhampton has some of the most beautiful beaches on the East coast, and many of them are open to the public. Boating and sailing are also popular sports in this exclusive community, as is diving and windsurfing. Water enthusiasts will marvel at the clear water and sunny beaches in this charming community.
