If you are a history buff, then the best way to see some of the historic parts of any town means a walking tour. When you plan a walking vacation, regardless of where it is, there are a few things you will have to consider. First of all, you will want to wear a hat and sunscreen when you are outdoors. And always carry a water bottle to stay hydrated. However, the number one problem with most walkers on tours like these is blisters.

Blisters can ruin an otherwise pleasant vacation. They can be painful and if not properly cared for, they can become infected. Luckily, there are a few strategies to banish blisters so that you can have a pleasant walking vacation tour.

1. It is all about the shoes. Choose comfortable, cushiony shoes that provide enough room for your feet to move around inside it. The rule is to leave about ? inch space between the toes and inside edges of the shoe. Also, you should break in the shoes gradually so that when it is time to vacation, you will have already broken them in and conformed to your feet. With some shoes, breaking them in causes a few blisters, so get that out of the way before the big trip.

2. Build up calluses. Sure calluses are not part of having sexy feet. However they are a part of having a comfortable walking tour. When you have calluses, there is no tender skin rubbing raw and forming blisters.

3. Choose the right socks. Many experts believe that cotton soaks up your sweat leaving feet prone to blisters. Synthetic socks are the best bet because the keep the moisture away from your feet. You will have to experiment with the thickness of your socks to determine what would best keep blisters at bay. Another smart move is to carry an extra pair of socks with you so that you can change them halfway through your walking tour day.

4. Keep your feet dry. Some marathoners swear by apply an extra-strength antiperspirant stick onto their feet. Not only did this keep their feet dry, it also prevented the friction that causes blisters. You can try this method or even plain old cornstarch baby powder. Reapplications are likely needed throughout your day.

5. Bandage your problem areas. Sometimes using bandages are the best way to go. You can apply them to your problem areas like the heels and toes. There are some special ones made that are gel cushioned or those made of moleskin.

6. Lubricate your feet before putting on socks. The lubrication from Vaseline or a diaper rash treatment keeps your feet from sweating and creating the friction that causes blisters. Plus, the side benefit is that you will have soft touchable feet!

There are countless other ways to prevent blisters and everyone likely has a home remedy that their grandma told them to try. The bottom line is that you do whatever works for you. It's important to take care of your feet because those are what hold you up all day on those walking tours!
