Savvy Sun Smarts To Avoid Getting Sick On Vacation
Whether you live in south Texas or are traveling to some hot exotic locale, there are some basic health tips to keep your from getting sick. Sun exposure is of the most concern because when you are having fun, you tend to forget about that big cancer causing, heat stroke producing ball in the sky.
Staying cool in the heat is of utmost importance. If you can practice some savvy sun smarts, you will likely stay happy and healthy while on vacation. Therefore, you might want to check out some of these tips below:
1. Get up early and stay out late. By doing your sightseeing and activities before ten in the morning or after about four or five in the afternoon, you can avoid the worst of the heat. The sun is strongest in the middle part of the day so you should try and stay indoors or at least in the shade.
2. Keep protected. You should use at least an SPF of fifteen or higher when applying sunscreen. The higher the SPF the greater your protection against sunburn and skin cancer is. Even with an SPF of thirty five or above, you will still likely attain that light tan you want so badly. Be sure that you reapply the sunscreen every so often depending on your swimming activities and sweating.
3. Wear a hat and sunglasses. Your head and face and ears will be protected from the sun and the sunglasses protect your eyes from sun damage by blocking those ultraviolet rays. The polarized variety is best.
4. If you plan to dress up, try and use makeup which provide some SPF protection as well as lip balms with SPF as well.
5. When taking medications, be sure and check the side effects. There are some medications whose side effects say that they intensify the sun's effects on your body. Therefore, you may be more susceptible to sunburn or heat rashes.
6. Wear clothing that will protect your skin. This means long sleeved shirts and pants or skirts, preferably in dark colors as the light colors tend to allow too many ultraviolet rays to pass through.
7. Protect your kids from the sun by making them wear heats and sunscreen too. In fact, because they love to swim, they are more likely to burn because their sunscreen washes off too quickly. Therefore, re-apply sunscreen often to prevent sunburn.
8. Keep a water bottle with you at all times. It is so easy to become dehydrated when out and about. Consciously remember to drink water.
9. Take a first aid and safety course. Sometimes, people who spend too much time outdoors in the sun can develop heat exhaustion or heat stroke. When you are trained to recognize the symptoms, you can act that much faster to get help.
Summer time is fun but getting sick is not. Be sure to follow the tips listed above to avoid getting caught by the sun. Taking precautions will keep you from getting burned literally and figuratively during your vacation.
