Becoming ill during your trip abroad can be a scary experience. You are far from home, away from the familiar. Being sick close to home is stressful enough, but the anxiety and problem is compounded when you are in a foreign land and know nothing about how or where to get medical care. There are plenty of countries with excellent medical facilities. However, without proper guidance you may not be able to identify those places. And in developing countries, you are dealing with potential unsanitary and frankly, health threatening conditions.

It is safe to say that before you even take off for your international adventure, you should really plan ahead any contingencies for medical care. You will have to research and identify those places abroad where you could potentially go for treatment if the need arises. In addition, you should find out how you would pay for medical care and what would happen if you had to be evacuated or transported to another facility.

Before jetting off

Contact your current health insurance company and see what coverage, if any, they provide for overseas excursions. Do they even offer supplemental coverage for traveling overseas? If so, it would be wise to invest in a short term policy and garner a list of medical facilities in the area where you are visiting that will accept the insurance.

You may want to consult with the Department of State and even the consulate of your destination country and see if you can obtain a list of medical facilities that will treat America citizens. In addition, if you used a travel agent for booking your travel plans, you might want to ask them for suggestions about travel health insurance. As someone closely tied to the industry, they may have information that could prove helpful for medical care abroad.

Some credit card companies operate all over the world. Check to see if yours is one of them. If so, ask them for suggestions or referrals to medical centers or reputable doctors within your destination area. And if you have signed up for a tour, chances are that the tour company leading it has contact with a number of medical facilities in which you will travel. Be sure to confirm medical treatment options before booking your trip.

Paying for medical coverage

Identifying medical facilities is half the battle. Paying for services rendered in another country is a bit tricky. You must create a plan of action for paying for medical treatment. From extending the credit on your credit card to finding out how to wire money so that your family can do so for you are just a few things you should do.

If you do purchase travel health insurance, you should not that not every medical facility overseas will accept it. Be prepared to pay full price for treatment and then getting reimbursed later by the insurance company. Also, be sure to carry a list of important numbers with you like friends, family, your doctor, your travel health insurance company and even the phone number of the local American embassy if you are having problems that cannot be solved by normal methods.

The goal is to not get sick while traveling. However, that is not something you can always control. So therefore, you should always have a plan of action for your health when traveling abroad.
