If you plan to travel abroad, you need to prepare for all contingencies. And that means taking a look at your current health insurance. What if you sick far from home? Does your current insurance cover medical treatment abroad? Many health insurance companies do not cover any type of treatment while in another country. And you can bet that if you are in a third world or developing country, your health insurance won't cover evacuation from there.

No one plans to get sick or hurt while on a trip abroad. However, it does happen to thousands of people every year. Therefore, you should prepare for that contingency. Any number of things could happen such as a traffic accident or a simple fall in the hotel bathtub. You could get food poisoning or even have a heart attack.

If your health insurance doesn't cover anything outside your home country, how do you expect to pay for any medical services abroad? What if you need prescription medication or even hospitalization? You need a travel health insurance plan.

There are a number of policy types to consider when it comes to travel health insurance. For instance, some are rather limited in scope and may just cover accidents. Others may cover only a doctor's care or hospitalization. Then you have the bundled policies which encompass not only medical coverage but also insurance for lost baggage or cancelled travel plans.

You can expect that your premium for this supplemental travel health insurance will reflect the breadth of services you can expect to be covered. You will want general medical services and surgery covered as well as follow-up treatments, medication, lab testing, hospitalization and any other expenses related to your sickness or injury.

It can cost thousands of dollars overseas for medical coverage if you are not insured. Do you have access to that kind of money if you get hurt or sick? Chances are that you do not. Therefore, a travel health insurance policy is important. Be prepared to be denied or pay exorbitant fees for pre-existing conditions.

Evacuating and transporting you home due to some type of illness or injury can be astronomical in price. Be sure that your travel health insurance will cover at least a portion of this cost. Also, another thing to think about is your credit card. You just might have a bit of coverage thrown in. However, before you head off on your grand adventure abroad, you will want to investigate this avenue first.

The bottom line is that you have to weigh the pros and cons of whether to take out travel health insurance or not. If you are in excellent health and can remember to follow safety health precautions like not drinking the water, then you can probably get away without it. However, if you have a pre-existing condition or are just prone to mishaps, then go ahead and invest in this extra little policy on your health. Your peace of mind is worth the price you pay for this travel health insurance plan.
