Visiting the Hamptons soon? If so, do not miss visiting Montauk, or "The End" as it is called as this quaint village is located on the tip of the upscale, Long Island community. Montauk is well known with filmgoers as this tiny village was the inspiration for the 1977 film "Jaws."

Montauk is the most popular fishing community in this upscale, New York resort. There are about 20 different marinas located throughout the tiny village and hundreds of charter and party fishing boats available for those who want to either fish or watch the wonderful whales that often mate in the waters during the summer months.

Montauk was once considered the "Miami Beach of the North." The Great Depression put a halt on development in the 1930s, perhaps to the advantage of the charming village. Quaint shops line the streets, quality accommodations are available throughout the area, restaurants offer fresh caught seafood, hiking, horseback riding and fishing are available to all visitors and the beaches are absolutely divine.

Even golfing enthusiasts love Montauk as it boasts of several wonderful public courses that are both challenging and picturesque. Imagine golfing along pristine fairways with the Atlantic Ocean as a backdrop. Simply breathtaking. Even those who can't hit the ball further than a few feet will enjoy a walk on the beautiful golf courses in Montauk.

In the summer, surfers from all over the East Coast converge on Montauk to take advantage of the fabulous waves from the North Atlantic ocean. Lifeguards adorn the charming beaches and there are picnic areas, food courts and changing rooms.

History enthusiasts will enjoy visiting some of the early colonial homes that are open to the public, such as Third House. Third House was built in 1747 and was actually used by Teddy Roosevelt as a residence during the Spanish American War. Today you can visit this charming, historical house that displays turn of the century antiques as well as an opportunity for stargazing.

Another point of interest in Montauk is the Montauk Point Lighthouse at Montauk State Park. This is the oldest lighthouse in New York that is still operating and visitors can climb to the top of the 80 foot structure and see a picture-postcard view. The Montauk Point Lighthouse is one of the most popular attractions in the Hamptons and is well worth the visit.

The Second House Museum is also a great find for history buffs. This 1746 farmhouse was built in 1746 and welcomes visitors from far and wide. For a bit of local history about the Hamptons community, visit this charming, historical landmark.

Fabulous seafood restaurants adorn Montauk as well as wonderful, quaint little shops. Montauk is truly one of the best kept secrets in the Hamptons. Anyone who appreciates historical and natural beauty will love their visit to Montauk, The Hamptons, Long Island, New York.
