Travel experts say that you should always be prepared in case of a medical emergency. Have a game plan; pack your personal medical kit for any health contingencies. However, what you don't hear a lot of is how to handle a dental emergency if you are far from home.

Do you know what to do in case you have any dental problems while traveling? There are a few things you can pack with you or find in a pharmacy near your destination. Plus, you will need a plan of action if the services of a dentist are absolutely needed. Here are just a few things you can do:

1. If you recently had fillings, crowns or bridge work done, you are at a critical time. Usually if something goes wrong with them, it usually happens within a few weeks. Therefore, if you must travel, try and get your dental work a few weeks in advance.

Of course, the best laid plans can go awry. Therefore, if you lose a filling while on a trip, consider purchasing temporary filling material from a local pharmacy. It is over the counter and purely a quick stop gap measure till you can get home to your own dentist or find one while on vacation. If you use the temporary filling for too long, it can actually be harmful to your tooth. Also, if you are worried about your bridge or crown, look into the possibility of a temporary dental cement product. Ask your dentist about it before you leave.

2. Salt cures many ills and can be a lifesaver in case of a toothache. Rinsing with a salt water solution can help wash away any food debris from an aching tooth and solve your problem. Be sure to pack a pain reliever like acetaminophen as well.

3. Dental floss is always a big help. There are certain foods like popcorn that can cause great pain if lodged in certain areas. The only thing that can really help is the use of dental floss to get into hard to reach areas. Toothpicks or other sharp implements could potential get caught in your teeth too and compound the problem. Dental floss is your best bet.

4. If you have orthodontia, be sure to pack extra wax. Sometimes a wire or bracket breaks. Until you can get it repaired, the wax placed on the protruding sharp ends will protect your mouth from cuts and scrapes. Of course, the best scenario would be to see an orthodontist right away.

5. Contact your insurance company if you have dental coverage to see if there are any approved providers in the area where you are staying. You might want to see if any of them take emergency patients to ease your mind so that you know there is an option. Be sure to take your own dentist's contact information with you so that the dentist you see in an emergency can confer with them.

While dental emergencies during a trip rarely happen, having a contingency plan in place should ease your mind. That way, there is no thinking involved if something does happen. You can just execute your plan, take care of your dental emergency and lose very little of your vacation time.
