Hot Spots In Omaha, Nebraska
Omaha is the largest city in the state of Nebraska. In 2006 the city had over 400,000 residents. The city and its suburbs make it the 60th largest metropolitan area in the United States. "Gateway to the West" is Omaha's nickname because of its central location as a transportation hub in the 1800s. The city is home to such companies as Conagra and Union Pacific, and has been listed in the top 10 high tech cities. Omaha has more to offer than just businesses though.
A popular tourist stop is the Henry Doorly Zoo. In the past it has been ranked as the best zoo in the United States. The zoo includes the largest indoor rainforest in the world. Guests can walk through the rainforest on a dirt path, or use a walkway to see the animals from around and above. 90 species of animals and birds can be found in the exhibit including Scarlet Macaws, the Blue Monkey, and the Ring-tailed Lemur. There is also a large amount of plant life in the building. The zoo holds the largest indoor desert. The desert dome is home to animals from deserts around the world. You will be able to see Meekrats, Pumas, Hummingbirds, and Prairie Dogs, just to name a few. The zoo also has the second largest free-fly aviary, and the Lozier IMAX Theater. A train is available that runs through the zoo for a fun ride.
If you want to see a popular neighborhood in the city, try the Old Market. It is located in downtown Omaha. It offers many restaurants, retail shops, and art galleries. The area has an old-time feel to it, because it still has its brick paved streets from the turn of the century, along with horse-drawn carriages. On any given day you might also find street performers and artists. Some hot spots in the neighborhood include Old Market Candy Shop which sells homemade chocolates, Vivace, an Italian restaurant, Maggie Moo's, which specializes in ice cream, and Drastic Plastic which is a record store. It is a great place to have a meal and do some shopping for souvenirs.
The Joslyn Art Museum is the only art museum in the state with a comprehensive permanent collection. Some of them include Ancient, which has an extraordinary collection of Greek pottery, American, that includes the works of Winslow Homer, Childe Hassam, and Native American which has both traditional art, and art influenced and against the Europeans. The highlights of the museum are the 19th and 20th century American and European art. Special exhibitions are regular features throughout the year. The museum has great importance in the area for education and also has an auditorium where concerts are held.
Omaha may be in the plains, but has much to offer its visitors. Just taking a stroll by the Missouri River is beautiful. It city offers landmarks, and has a deep history. Omaha is a safe and lively city to visit. You will keep busy with all that the city has to offer.
