No one wants to think that something will happen when they travel, but by being prepared, you can guarantee that you will be well taken care of.
There are at least five ways you can keep your health information accessible when traveling. Each has its advantages and you can do one or more of them. No matter what though, these ways will get you treated a lot more quickly in case of an emergency.
1. Medical alert bracelets – These medical alerts have come a long way from the standard silver looking clunky metal link bracelets. Some people did not want to wear them because they were ugly. However, now you have a number of style options to choose from that are attractive. Of course, they still the job that is intended – alert medical professionals to any illness or condition like allergies or diabetes you may have which can make the difference in medical treatment.
2. Information cards for your wallet – These cards for your wallet will contain all your contact information such as emergency contacts, doctor phone numbers, pharmacy numbers, medical conditions, medications taken, allergies and so forth. Of course, it is important for you to remember to update it periodically with any changes in your information. Otherwise, how useful can it be to medical personnel who are trying to help you?
3. Medical key chains – There is one such device called a Scroll ID which allows you to have all your personal medical information entered into it. It comes in a small case which attaches to your keychain. This device is easily recognizable on the keychain in case of emergencies.
4. USB flash drives – While ambulances may not have a way to access the information, hospital personnel can. You can store all of your personal and medical information quite easily on this special flash drive which can attach to your keychain. There are some you can purchase through medical supply companies or you can create your own.
5. Cell phones – Most people do not think to program numbers into their cell phone and list them as emergency numbers. Many times, if medical professionals cannot find your personal information, they will look to a cell phone as a clue to who to contact. If you place a special sticker on your cell phone alerting medical professionals that you have emergency contact numbers inside, they will be able to contact friends or family quickly.
There are quite a few gadgets on the market for making your medical information accessible in case of an emergency. It is up to you to decide which ones to consider. Combining several options is the best bet to ensure that you will be taken care of in an emergency when you cannot speak for yourself.
