Are you one of those contrary travelers who prefer to vacation in cold weather places? If you like to go skiing or ice fishing while others head to the tropics of the Caribbean or some other exotic locale, then you will want to brush up on your cold weather smarts before your next cool vacation.

There are a plethora of cold weather fun activities to be had in cold weather climates. However, because cold weather can turn on you quite easily, you should be prepared to tough it out just in case. Obviously, warm gloves and coats are a necessity as are hats, ski masks and water resistant boots. These are not the only things to think about though. There are a whole host of issues to deal with and prepare for. Read on for some extra tips in dealing with cold weather.

Getting dressed for your cool vacation

For your comfort and protection, you want to dress in layers for warmth. Make sure these layers are of soft, loose fit clothing. These layers create air pockets which provide insulation that keeps warm. With the layers, you could always remove one or add it back as the weather dictates.

Your outer jacket should be constructed of a repellant, windbreaker material. This material is perfect for deflecting some of the bitter, chilling winds that often are what wears people down first in the cold weather. Also, if possible, make sure that your outerwear is water resistant. Rain in super cold weather can be dangerous and if your clothing gets wet, you are in grave danger from hypothermia.

Hypothermia dangers

Hypothermia is not just a cold weather danger. It lurks on even mild days. Hypothermia occurs when your body temperature at its cored drops too low. Seniors and children are most susceptible. Your risk of hypothermia exponentially rises when there is water involved. By dressing appropriately as listed above, you can increase your chances of survival. If you fall in icy water or it rains on a cold day, you must get out of the elements as soon as possible, get to shelter and remove the wet clothes and get warm.

If you notice someone becoming clumsy, stumbling over words, losing concept of reality and shivering really hard, get them medical help and shelter. These are signs of hypothermia.

Frostbite woes

Frostbite is a distinct possibility if you have been out in the cold elements for too long. Frostbite happens when some of your extremities actually freeze. The skin becomes white and hard and there can be swelling, pain and numbness at the sight. Whatever you do, if you suspect that you or someone else is experiencing frostbite, do not try to warm and thaw the area unless you are in a safe shelter and there is no possibility of the area refreezing. This refreezing can cause irreparable damage.

As you can see, cold weather is fraught with a number of dangers. However, do not let them curtail your cold weather fun. If you check the weather each day and watch the news for any dangers such as avalanches or thawing lakes where ice skating occurs, you can drastically drop the odds of a cold weather health problem. Common sense often rules in these situations. Do not take any chances.
