Just because you have diabetes doesn't mean you can't travel. All it takes is a few precautionary measures and planning for contingencies in case of a diabetic emergency. Traveling domestically is not as much of a problem as international destinations. For instance, if you lost your luggage with medication in it, you could call your pharmacy and then pick up your prescription at practically any of the chain locations, as long as it is not a mom-and-pop operation. That is something that you cannot do overseas very easily.

Talk with your doctor about your travel destination. Will it be a place that will require immunizations? How will those shots react with your diabetes? Also, are the health risks in traveling to certain countries abroad worth the trouble? The answer is most likely not, especially if you have been experiencing complications from your diabetes.

If you are set to fly, be sure to contact the airlines to ensure that you can choose a special meal based on your dietary needs if possible. Call the hotels at your destination to ensure that they offer diabetic menus or at least healthy options for your diet. And as a safety precaution for you, wear a medical bracelet depicting all your health information including the fact that you are diabetic.

Do not pack your medication inside your luggage. Yours will end up being the one sacrificial piece of luggage; it's Murphy's Law. However, if you pack your medications inside your carry-on bag, you will always be prepared. Keep that original medicine container. Also, make sure that you travel with a note from your doctor on official letterhead which details your medications and condition.

Bring a copy of your medications with you along with a copy of their generic name incase that is the only name it goes by in other countries. Plan for contingencies and pack double your medication to anticipate the option of staying a few extra days. If you must test your insulin letters several times a day, be sure to always carry spare batteries for the glucose meter as well as testing strips.

Prepare for blood sugar drops and keep some snacks on hand. You do not know what resources you may have at your destination. Peanut butter crackers and dried fruit are options of easy, portable snack. Identify medical facilities and even doctors at your destination who would be well-equipped to handle any diabetic emergencies. And do not forget to check your insurance to see if they even cover medical treatment where you are going and plan for a payment contingency if they do not.

The most important issue is staying healthy and ensuring that you have a good supply of medication for your diabetes. Also, you will want to take precautions against overdoing activities. Wear comfortable shoes and drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated. Traveling as a diabetic is not complicated. It just takes a little forethought and planning to ensure a safe and healthy trip, no matter where you are going.
