Minneapolis is the largest city in the state of Minnesota. It adjoins with St. Paul, which is the capital of the state. These two cities are known as the twin cities, making it the fifteenth largest metropolitan area in the United States. Minneapolis has many lakes, waterfalls, creeks, and the Mississippi riverfront. This is why the city has the nickname "City of Lakes". There are many things families can enjoy when visiting the twin cities. Water activities are popular, but there are also museums and the popular Mall of America.

Mall of America is located 15 minutes from Minneapolis. In 2006, it drew more than 40 million visitors. It is the third largest mall when it comes to retail stores, but it is the largest mall when it comes to space. It might be a surprise that despite how it gets as cold as the arctic in the Minnesota winters, only the entrances of the mall are heated. The heat is allowed through skylights above the mall. It does get hot when there is many people the mall, so believe or not, the air conditioning system runs year round to maintain comfortable temperatures. Inside of the mall there is a theme park known as Nickelodeon Universe. It features three roller coasters along with other rides, making it the largest indoor theme park in the United States. Other attractions throughout the mall include a wedding chapel, Underwater Adventures Aquarium, and a 14-screen AMC movie theater. There is also a variety of restaurants for when you work up an appetite from all the walking you will be doing.

After seeing so many people at the Mall of America, why not take a break and see some animals at the Minnesota Zoo. It is opened year round with the exceptions of certain holidays. The zoo consists of five themed areas, including three themed walking trails that are between one and two miles in length. These exhibits include the Minnesota Trail that features animals native to the state. You will see cougars, beavers, river otters, and more. Another trail at the zoo is the Tropics Trail. It is an indoor exhibit, giving the feeling of being right in the rainforest. It is home to such as animals as the Tree Kangaroo, Ring-tailed Lemur, and the Komodo dragon. The zoo also has an IMAX theater and an amphitheater that is used for bird shows, and concerts that are throughout the summer.

If you enjoy amusement parks and are in the area between Memorial Day and Labor Day, you might want to try Valleyfair. Valleyfair is a 125 acre amusement park, making it the largest park in the Upper Midwest. It has over 60 rides and 8 roller coasters. The most popular roller coaster at the park is the "Wild thing". There is also a water park that is located inside the amusement park. Some family rides include bumper boats, tilt-a-whirl, Ferris wheel, and Go-Karts. Little children will have fun on rides for their size. They can ride on the bumble bee, kiddie carousal, and the train. It is fun and excitement for the whole family!

Places To Visit In Detroit, Michigan

Detroit is considered a major city in the Midwest and is the largest city in the state of Michigan. In 2007, the city marked as the United State's eleventh most populous city with more than 900,000 residents. Detroit is rare for the fact that it is the only U.S. city that looks south to Canada. Windsor, Ontario is considered a part of the Detroit metropolitan area, making it international. Detroit offers many museums for tourists to discover. Some of these museums include the Detroit Historical Museum, the Detroit Science Center, and the Contemporary Art Institute of Detroit. There are also many festivals throughout the year. There is always something happening in Detroit, making the city used to tourists and the large crowds.

International River Days is a five day festival that is along the International Riverfront. In the past over 35 million people have joined in on the event. Detroit and Windsor, Ontario celebrate the festival together which takes place at the end of June to commemorate each country's national holiday. The festival celebrates both Canada Day which is July 1, and Independence Day, on July 4th. On the Windsor side of the festival there is a midway of concessions and carnival rides. Other activities are planned for each day of the festival, ending on the last day with one of the world's largest fireworks displays. It is fun for the whole family!

Belle Isle Park is a 982 acre island park that is in the Detroit River. It is connected to the rest of the city by the MacArthur Bridge. It is the largest city park and is the largest island park in the United States. It is even larger than Central Park in New York City. On the island you will find the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory which is the oldest in the country, the Dossin Great Lakes Museum, a Coast Guard Post, the Detroit Yacht club, and a golf course. It also contains a Nature Center that has wooded trails and beautiful wildlife. The island also features the only beach in the city of Detroit. It is available to the public for swimming.

The Detroit Zoo is recognized as one of the top zoos in the country. One of the favorite exhibits amongst guests is the Arctic Ring of Life. It is the world's largest Polar Bear exhibit. As a visitor, you can view the Polar Bears and Seals from a 70 foot long underwater tunnel. It provides a 360-degree view of the aquarium above. One of the zoos newest additions is the Australian Outback Adventure. Visitors walk through a 2 acre simulated outback which has red kangaroos and wallabies. There are only knee-high wire cables that separate the animals from the visitors, letting the visitors see them up close. Do not be disappointed when you do not see elephants at the zoo. In 2005, the zoo gave up their elephants because of the cold Michigan winters. The elephants now reside in California.

Milwaukee is the biggest city in the state of Wisconsin, and the 22nd largest city population wise, in the United States. Milwaukee used to be known mainly for its beer and manufacturing, but in recent years, the city has added new additions to change its image. This includes Milwaukee Riverwalk, Miller Park, and the Midwest Airlines Center. Also added was the internationally renowned Milwaukee Art Museum. Besides the tourist attractions, Milwaukee has added new skyscrapers, condos, and apartments near Lake Michigan which attracts new residents to the area. These new residents will quickly learn that Milwaukee offers many fun things to do for your whole family.

If visiting Milwaukee in the summer, be sure to attend Milwaukee's Summerfest, which is also known as "The Big Gig". This is a yearly festival held by the shores of Lake Michigan. Summerfest lasts 11 days, which includes the 4th of July. It is known as the world's largest music festival. You will find many stages with performers that are local, and nationally known. The festival allows you to try a variety of foods from popular Milwaukee restaurants, and don't forget about the beer! Besides the food and music, Summerfest offers comedians, shopping areas, activities for children, and fireworks.

Summerfest is not the only festival that is popular in the summer by Lake Michigan. There is a variety of ethnic festivals that run each weekend. The city of Chicago is the largest in the state of Illinois and the whole Midwest region. The population is over 300 million, which makes it the third largest city in the United States. A popular tourist stop happens to be the famous, Sears Tower. It has been the tallest building in the United States since 1973. It has 108 stories, with antennas making the tower over 1,730 feet. The Sears Tower Skydeck was first opened in 1974, which is located on the 103rd floor of the tower. Tourists can get to the Skydeck in under a minute by the special elevators. When the skies are perfect, you can see the plains in Illinois, and even across Lake Michigan. If you are visiting on a windy day, don't be surprised if the building sways. Some days the 103rd floor Skydeck is closed, so there is another Skydeck available on the 99th floor. Be sure to check out the highest point in the whole state of Illinois. Omaha is the largest city in the state of Nebraska. In 2006 the city had over 400,000 residents. The city and its suburbs make it the 60th largest metropolitan area in the United States. "Gateway to the West" is Omaha's nickname because of its central location as a transportation hub in the 1800s. The city is home to such companies as Conagra and Union Pacific, and has been listed in the top 10 high tech cities. Omaha has more to offer than just businesses though.

A popular tourist stop is the Henry Doorly Zoo. In the past it has been ranked as the best zoo in the United States. The zoo includes the largest indoor rainforest in the world. Guests can walk through the rainforest on a dirt path, or use a walkway to see the animals from around and above. 90 species of animals and birds can be found in the exhibit including Scarlet Macaws, the Blue Monkey, and the Ring-tailed Lemur. There is also a large amount of plant life in the building. The zoo holds the largest indoor desert. The desert dome is home to animals from deserts around the world. You will be able to see Meekrats, Pumas, Hummingbirds, and Prairie Dogs, just to name a few. The zoo also has the second largest free-fly aviary, and the Lozier IMAX Theater. A train is available that runs through the zoo for a fun ride.

If you want to see a popular neighborhood in the city, try the Old Market. It is located in downtown Omaha. It offers many restaurants, retail shops, and art galleries. The area has an old-time feel to it, because it still has its brick paved streets from the turn of the century, along with horse-drawn carriages. Cincinnati is the third largest city in the state of Ohio, with it being the 56th largest city in the United States. It consists of a large metropolitan area that also includes parts of Kentucky and Indiana. The city has one of the largest collections of nineteenth-century Italianate architecture in America, which is mainly found north of downtown. Cincinnati is home to major-league sports including the Cincinnati Reds, and the Cincinnati Bengals. Don't worry if you are not a sports fan, there are a lot of other activities to do in the city besides watching a game.

Cincinnati was the first city in America to have a fully paid professional fire department. It is no surprise that there is a museum. It is known as the Cincinnati Fire Museum. Inside you will find artifacts from the area's firefighters that were taken from past and present time. The museum also has an interactive exhibit that allows guests to touch and feel a fire engine cab by ringing the bell, turning on the lights, and blasting the siren. The museum is located in a firehouse that was built in 1907. There is an admission fee to enter, but is well worth it, especially if you ever dreamt of being a firefighter.

The Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden is well worth a visit. It is the second oldest zoo in the United States, opening in 1875. The zoo has been rated one of the top in the country, and also is world renowned for its breeding programs, especially for Cheetahs. There is over 700 species currently at the zoo. Some of the exhibits include Manatee Springs, which focuses on Florida marine life. Another exhibit is the Lords of the Arctic which showcases Polar Bears. Berry International Friendship Park was named after the first African American city mayor and is a perfect spot for celebrations and events. Cincinnati was once considered the first true American city, because it didn't have the European influences that the East Coast had. Cleveland is the 33rd largest city in the United States. It is in Northeastern Ohio, with Lake Erie alongside. In 2005, Cleveland was named one of the most livable cities to reside in. Cleveland is known for its association of Rock music, which is a reason the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is found there. There are many fun things to do when in Cleveland. There are a handful of museums to choose from. Festivals are common in Cleveland and are held throughout the year. Cleveland does not lack in pleasing its visitors.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a hot-spot for tourists. It is dedicated to displaying some of the most influential artists and producers of the music industry. Some of the artists found at the Hall of Fame are Chuck Berry, Ray Charles, Buddy Holly, and Elvis Presley. The museum consists of seven levels. Five of the levels hold permanent and some temporary exhibits that are about the history of Rock n Roll. Some of these exhibits hold mannequins that wear outfits from different popular performers. There are also different areas that depict scenes from various cities in different eras, such as Los Angeles in the 70s. The seventh floor is about a certain artist or group. The Eleanor Armstrong Smith Glasshouse is home to plant and wildlife in two separate biomes. One of the biomes is the spiny desert of Madagascar and the other is the cloud forest of Costa Rica. These biomes are home to over 350 species of plants and 50 species of animals. Also on the property is over 10 acres of gardens, including the award winning Hershey's Children's Garden. Also included is the Japanese Garden, and Sears-Swetland Rose Garden.

Indianapolis is the state of Indiana's most populous city and is the 13th largest city in the United States, with it being the 3rd largest city in the Midwest. Indianapolis is the fastest growing metropolitan area in the United States. The city is quite known for hosting the popular Indianapolis 500 every year. If you do not enjoy racing, don't fret, the city has more to offer than just that event.

Over 1.4 million visitors enjoy the Indianapolis Zoo every year. The zoo is separated into different biomes, with the animals from similar climates being in each biome. These biomes actively take part in conservation and breeding programs. The biomes include tropical and temperate forests, deserts, marine mammals, oceans, and plains. There is also an exhibit called the "Encounter" biome. Visitors can interact with the animals and learn about them as well as plants. Zookeepers show guests different animals such as snakes, and spiders which can be touched. The outside of the biome has more common animals to pet. You will be able to touch horses, rabbits, and more. One of the most unique parts of the zoo is the Dolphin Adventure Pavilion. In this exhibit the visitors get to see dolphins that are in a 30-foot diameter, 12-foot high underwater dome. This has never been done at other zoos in the United States yet. There are dolphin shows every day in a pool that is in the pavilion. The zoo also offers dolphin program that is for the public. It teaches the guests about the marine animal.

A place great for the kids is the Children's Museum of Indianapolis. It is the largest children's museum in the entire world. Some ways to have a fun time is by digging for dinosaur fossils, exploring a log cabin from the 1800s, watching a show in the planetarium, and riding the carousal. In 2006, a new exhibit was added to the museum called Fireworks of Glass. It contains many types of blown glass to view. There are also many temporary exhibits, so before visiting, see what is available. There is an admission fee, but some days are free.

If you are in the mood for a tour, why not go on the best tour in Indy, which is of the Crown Hill Cemetery. It is the third largest cemetery in the United States. You will find more than 25 miles of paved roads, over 150 types of plants and trees and close to 200,000 grave sites, some dating back from the 1800s. The cemetery is also the largest refuge for animals in the city, with more than 300 deer living there. The tour explores the Gothic Chapel, the Waiting Station from the 1800s, and gravesites of famous people. The city of St. Louis is found in the state of Missouri. It was the last stop for pioneers before making the journey to the West, towards the Pacific. The city is known for its German and French heritage. It is named after King Louis IX of France. St. Louis has a few different nicknames, such as "Gateway to the West", and "Mound City". The city is the 18th largest metropolitan area in the United States. Being that the city has a big population; it offers many activities for tourists to do.

When thinking of St. Louis, the arch might come to mind. It is an icon for the city. Its official name is the "Gateway Arch". It stands over 630 feet tall, making it the tallest habitable structure in St. Louis. It is also the world's tallest monument. Below the arch is the visitor center which can be entered at either base of the arch. Inside the center is a museum about Westward Expansion and also exhibits on the history of the St. Louis riverfront. There is also a theater that has 255 seats, which shows different films, one being about the making of the Arch. Visitors can take a ride on a tram which is an egg-shaped compartment that carries the guests to the top of the Arch. Once at the top, you can view across the Mississippi River, and parts of Southern Illinois. It is a must-see landmark when visiting St. Louis.

If you love animals, a great place to go is the Saint Louis Zoological Park. The zoo is known as one of the best for animal management, conservation, and education. The zoo offers free admission, but some of the exhibits cost a fee to view. One feature the zoo has is the Zooline Railroad which takes passengers to the more popular exhibits in the zoo. Some of the exhibits you will find include the Penguin and Puffin Coast, which displays many water birds from a cold-weather climate controlled habitat. The Bear Pits is another exhibit in the zoo. It is one of the older botanical gardens in the United States and is considered a National Historic Landmark. Some of the features of the gardens include a Japanese strolling garden, the Climatron geodesic dome conservatory, a children's garden that also includes a pioneer village, playground, fountains, and more. During the year, the gardens are the spot of different ethnic festivals including a Japanese festival, and the Chinese Cultural Days. These festivals include food and music from those cultures. The Japanese festival even has sumo wrestling.

The city of Columbus is the capital and largest city in the state of Ohio. It was named after the explorer Christopher Columbus. It has been recognized as the 8th best large city in the United States to live in and has a diverse economy which is founded on technology, education, healthcare, and insurance. The city is ranked the 15th largest city in the United States. It offers many tourist attractions to keep the visitors happy.

The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is a fun place for the whole family. It brings over 1.5 million visitors a year and is home to 6,000 animals. The exhibits are displayed by eight different regions of the world. If you do not feel like walking, there is other ways of transportation through the zoo. There is a train that goes around the North American exhibit, and also a boat that rides around the islands of the Southeast Asia exhibit. One of the favorite displays at the zoo is the Shores exhibit. It includes manatees, which is very popular because it is only one of the three exhibits outside of Florida to have the mammals. You can also find flamingos and alligators in the Shores exhibit. Other animals you will find throughout the zoo include leopards, koalas, and orangutans. The zoo is open year-round so whenever you are in Columbus, the animals are available for you to see.
