Ask anyone what the best part of Baja is and you will most likely hear all about the beaches. The beach lifestyle is what draws most people to spend time on the beautiful Mexican peninsula of Baja. The peninsula's history is so enmeshed into everyday society that most visitors do not even realize how much Baja's history impacts present-day society. The rich history of Baja, its natural wonders, and its progressive growth provides visitors to Baja with plenty of attractions beyond the beach.

The Riviera Del Pacifico in Ensenada is a civic and cultural center where common events such as parties and weddings take place. This former hotel and casino now has a natural history museum where visitors can learn about missionaries and view native artifacts. The grounds outside the Riviera Del Pacifico boast beautiful gardens and a cafe, where you can sip coffee and imagine days gone by in this former popular hotel. Another great historical museum is housed at the La Mision de Nuestra Senora de Loreto. This is the first mission of Baja and helped to start the spread of the mission system throughout the rest of the Baja peninsula. The El Museo de Misiones highlights Baja history, the settlers, and the missionaries.

No trip to Ensenada in Baja, Mexico would be complete without a visit to La Bufadora. This natural attraction is a marine geyser that can spout water up to eighty feet. This geyser near the Punta Banda peninsula is the second highest geyser after Hawaii. If possible, try to find a local to share the legend of the trapped whale, which is supposed to explain the shooting water and loud noise put out by the geyser. Apparently, locals believe that a baby whale was trapped in the underwater cave, the now grown whale causes all of the noise and water spouting that makes La Bufadora so popular. After hearing the whale legend, head on over to the Ensenada Fish Market and purchase some fresh seafood for dinner. The Fish Market is a hustle and bustle of local activity with people buying everything from shrimp to octopus. This is also a great place to try Baja's famous fish tacos.

Cabo San Lucas is where you can see El Arco. This beautiful and unique rock formation is shaped like an arch that some say looks like a dinosaur taking a drink of water. El Arco marks the spot where the Pacific Ocean and The Sea of Cortez meet. El Arco can be seen from land, but seeing it from the water is a much more surreal experience. Chartering a small boat or hopping on a guided tour is the best way to experience the beauty of El Arco. Not far from Cabo San Lucas, you will find La Paz's Malecon. The Malecon is simply a sidewalk area that runs along the ocean, but it is the place to go in La Paz. The Malecon is close to downtown, shopping, dancing, and dining. No matter what time of day it is there are always people at the Malecon in La Paz.

Baja, Mexico is more than just party central. The people of this beautiful Mexican peninsula have made sure to treasure and develop the culture and history of Baja, Mexico. Whether you are dancing with the locals, visiting natural wonders, or learning about the missionaries, Baja, Mexico is a mecca of popular and historical culture.

No trip to Mexico would be complete without soaking up sun and playing in the refreshing waters of Baja. Most travelers will find that Baja, Mexico offers a variety of beaches, islands, and bays to meet almost any aquatic need. You can take full advantage of Baja waters to swim, snorkel, scuba dive, fish, surf, or kayak. Just remember to bring plenty of water and sun block since corner stores are not always around in Baja, Mexico. The key to enjoying the waters around Baja, Mexico is to understand the basics of Baja beaches.

The Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortes surround the Mexican peninsula known as Baja. People familiar with these waters will tell you that swimming on the Pacific side can be dangerous. The Pacific waters hide strong undertows, swift currents, and boast powerful waves. With no lifeguards on duty at most beaches, or even hotel pools, Baja swimmers are left to their own judgment when deciding to swim. If swimming is your goal, then heading over to beaches located on the Sea of Cortez is your best bet. These waters are calmer and offer safer swimming conditions. However, do not let rough waters turn you away from the Pacific Ocean.

The Pacific Ocean side of Baja, Mexico offers beaches like the La Playita or little beach. This is a great beach to watch local fisherman reel in their catch of the day. Many of these fisherman are fourth or fifth generation anglers. Observing these local fisherman is taking in a part of Mexican culture. This side of Baja also offers some small islands that you can boat to and you may find prime swimming conditions. Todos Santos Islands are a perfect example of the sort of place that offers more tranquil waters. Estero Beach, a little south of Ensenada, is a great place for the family to enjoy beach activities. This beach is actually located on an estuary and boasts a fabulous boardwalk and volleyball playing area.

The best swimming though is found on the Sea of Cortez side of Baja, Mexico. Here is where you will find Rosarito Beach, which is a hustle and bustle of families, couples, and locals enjoying the beach life. The majority of activity takes place near the Rosarito Beach Hotel. Medano Beach is another popular beach with safe swimming and tons of tourist offerings. Local sellers will hock their wares to you while you sunbathe selling everything from hats to handmade crafts. Medano houses bars, restaurants, and hotels along its coastline. This beach is known as the party beach and is a great place to see and be seen while in Baja.

Playa La Paz is another great beach for swimming and activities. Located along the Malecon in La Paz, Playa La Paz is clean and convenient. The Malecon is like the life center in La Paz, so a trip to Playa La Paz does not take you very far from things to see and do in La Paz. With such a variety of beaches available, it may require more than one trip to Baja to see them all. Just remember, the best thing about Mexican beaches is that they are all public. So do not be deterred by a large hotel sitting on an immaculate beach. As long as you respect private property, all beaches are fair game. Finding a private path to them is the challenge.

Southern Baja, Mexico is one of the most popular places in Baja. With its reputation for great food, shopping, and nightlife most visitors step on Mexican soil and head right for the southern tip. The well-known towns of Los Cabos and La Paz are only one part of Southern Baja. A couple small towns offer nice hotels with beautiful views and amenities.

Santa Rosalia is home to the Hotel El Morro. This beautiful waterfront hotel overlooks the Sea of Cortez. Even though El Morro is not a large-scale resort it still offers a restaurant and bar that is popular with tourists. Mulege, a small town south of Santa Rosalia, offers a hotel called Hacienda. Many visitors are attracted to the Hacienda because of its low-key, comfortable ambiance and fairly priced accommodations. You can also book fishing or cave trips through the Hacienda. The Mulege, too, offers a restaurant and bar.

If you are going to be staying in Loreto then you will want to reserve a room at the Hotel Oasis. Hotel Oasis is located right on the beach and is popular with fisherman and others who do not want to be far from the water. Hotel Oasis has a reputation for excellent service and a very hospitable staff. This hotel also offers a restaurant, and a bar that overlooks the Sea of Cortez. Many patrons find it useful that you can book a fishing fleet, bring back your catch of the day and the hotel restaurant will prepare it for you at a specified price. Hotel Oasis also helps arrange trips to the Coronado Islands where you can watch the sea lion colonies.

The Hotel Los Arcos is a La Paz favorite for Baja travelers. This hotel is only a few blocks from downtown La Paz and the infamous Malecon. It is possible to access the beach directly from Hotel Los Arcos, and you are never more than a few steps away from fine dining and shopping. Of course, Hotel Los Arcos boasts its own wonderful restaurant, coffee shop and bar. This is a great hotel for divers who want to explore the wonders of the Sea of Cortez, or fisherman yearning for their next big catch. The hotel also offers two swimming pools, a sauna and a masseuse.

A great bed and breakfast away from the hustle and bustle of the Los Cabos area is Huerta Verde. This is a picturesque, rural setting away from the ocean. The orchard this bed and breakfast is set in has you surrounded by mango, plum, tangerine, and lime trees. Upon further inspection, you will notice avocado, banana, and coconut trees. Sitting on the open patio you will be surrounded by the beautiful nature of Baja, Mexico. A stroll along the grounds will have you congregating with hummingbirds and cardinals. Room rates include breakfast only, but other meals can be ordered in advance.

The Melia San Lucas Resort in Cabo San Lucas is a five star resort on a beautiful beach. This resort is one of those places you do not want to leave to explore the rest of the town. Its beautiful beachfront pool, safe swimming beach and deluxe accommodations have guests wishing they could move into Melia San Lucas. Known by most travelers as Me by Melia Cabo, this resort offers two pools with swim up bar, a kiddie pool, a nightclub, and the ability to book you almost any adventure you could want to experience. Whether you choose a resort, hotel, or quaint bed and breakfast, the offerings of Southern Baja, Mexico will please even the most discerning visitor.

Many couples plan a trip to Baja, Mexico for a little rest, relaxation, and romance. Upon arrival in Baja, many couples end up being swept into the endless partying and wonder where the romance went. However, if you go to Baja prepared to find romantic spots, you should be quite pleased with the variety Baja, Mexico offers couples.

A beautiful, secluded beach is every couple's dream when on a romantic trip. Playa Del Amor in Baja is the place to share with your loved one. Not only does the beach hold the honor of being called Lover's Beach, it is spectacularly secluded and beautiful.
This beach is hard to get to on foot, so a water taxi is your best option for heading over to Playa Del Amor. Pack a picnic lunch with some champagne and spend your day having a romantic lunch surrounded by the beautiful rock formations on Lover's Beach. Then spend some time gazing at the beautiful marine life that is abundant in the waters surrounding Playa Del Amor. If you are going to take a dip in the ocean, just be sure to swim on the Sea of Cortez side as opposed to the side facing the Pacific Ocean. The Sea of Cortez waters are calmer and more serene.

Another great getaway on the water is Isla Espiritu Santo. This mountainous island is popular with kayakers and can get crowded at times. However, the size of the island, and the many small beaches and coves, means there is a good chance you can stake a claim to your own private spot. Isla Espiritu Santo is slightly north of La Paz and is a great day trip to get in some snorkeling. If you are adventurous, you could boat over to Los Islotes, north of Isla Espiritu Santo, toss out an anchor and snorkel with some sea lions. One part of a romantic trip is to experience things you may never experience again. Snorkeling the waters near Los Islotes will have you experiencing once in a lifetime adventures.

Baja, Mexico is a great place to take a horseback riding tour. Many companies throughout Baja offer tours through desert areas and along the coastline. There are few moments as romantic as riding along the beach with a caramel colored sunset behind you. After horseback riding, enjoy a great dinner at the popular and romantic Damiana Restaurant in San Jose. Damiana offers beautiful courtyard seating with a softly lit bougainvillea in the evening. Locals and tourists have been known to think of Damiana's courtyard as one of the most romantic in Baja, Mexico. The menu offers local Mexican favorites along with international cuisine. Damiana Restaurant has been featured in Bon Appetit, so you are bound to find something tantalizing at this cozy restaurant.

If you do plan to spend one of your nights partying hard, keep it romantic by spending your day visiting the Santos Tomas Winery in Ensenada. Think of it as a jumpstart to the night ahead. Santos Tomas Winery is the most established winery in Baja. The picturesque drive through wine country alone is worth the trip. The tour of Santos Tomas Winery concludes with all the wine you can drink accompanied by some breads and cheeses.

With romantic beaches, cozy restaurants, and picturesque wineries, Baja, Mexico is more than just a party destination. Baja, Mexico offers one of the most romantic vacation destinations for couples. If you are planning a honeymoon, anniversary trip, or just a special getaway, consider Baja, Mexico to have a memorably, romantic time.

A trip to Baja, Mexico always seems to be on someone's agenda. This popular Mexican peninsula is home to some of the most famous party cities. Sometimes, deciding which city to visit first is harder than leaving Baja when your trip is over. Baja, Mexico is politically broken up into two parts- Baja California Norte or North Baja, and Baja California Sur or South Baja. Both areas offer a wide variety of clubs, restaurants, shops, beaches, hotels, and adventure. Most locals will tell you that you have not experienced Baja until you have driven it from top to bottom exploring all it has to offer.

Tijuana is usually the first place visitors see. While this border town has grown in its offerings of attractions, Tijuana still tends to be a one-day or one overnight trip for most visitors. Avenida Revolucion is still the main attraction for shops, restaurants, and local wares. The history of Avenida Revolucion is an interesting one for many Americans. During prohibition times, Avenida Revolucion developed into a well-known area that offered Americans the prohibited entertainment they could not get back in the states.

If you are a movie buff then you won't want to skip a visit to the little sleepy town of Rosarito, a few miles south of Tijuana. Rosarito doesn't offer much in the way of attractions other than Baja, Mexico's wonderful beaches. However, James Cameron's blockbuster film Titanic was filmed here and a permanent studio was built for future films.

Ensenada is the last city in Baja California Norte that offers a larger population and an array of attractions. Most of the beaches are north or south of town and tourist offices have lists of the safest beaches for surfing and diving. This town attracts college kids and partygoers looking for a good time. If you do stop in Ensenada then you must stop at Hussong's Cantina. This feel good bar is a staple of Ensenada and most don't leave Ensenada without taking home a memorable Hussong story to share.

When continuing your trek down Baja, Mexico a quick stop in Santa Rosalia will have you looking at the Iglesia Santa Barbara. If you are a fan of architecture, then you will be delighted to know that this church was designed by Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel, the creator of the world-renowned Eiffel tower. You can leave Santa Rosalia and head on over to the little fishing town of Loreto. This is a great place to spend the day fishing and put your feet up at one of the local hotels at night. This town doesn't have the hustle and bustle of some of the southern towns and cities, which makes it a great place to relax.

On the southern most point of Baja, you will find three of the most popular Baja towns and cities: La Paz, San Jose del Cabo, and Cabo San Lucas. All three of these cities offer some of the best beaches, clubs, restaurants, and shopping. Nevertheless, even on the southern most point of Baja you can still find some private areas in the towns of Buena Vista and the East Cape. About an hour south of La Paz Buena Vista and East Cape are a great place to fish, kayak, windsurf and more. Even with its current growth, there are still untouched places that make Buena Vista and East Cape extra special. If you are planning a trip to Baja, or have some extra time on your hands, a driving tour of Baja will provide even the most adventurous with a great trip.

If you are looking for something a little different while visiting Baja, start your meal at Cien Anos with a chopped cactus salad with cheese and shrimp. Then get more adventurous with the manta ray burritos or alligator tacos. Tantalize your taste buds with their special Pollo Cien Anos dish. This extremely hot chicken dish with toasted chipotle sauce will have you realizing where all those stories come from about hot Mexican food.

If you are striving for a little bit of tradition, then visit Puerto Nuevo's La Fonda restaurant. La Fonda is known for serving the traditional grilled lobster, refried beans, rice, homemade tortillas, butter, salsa, and lime. Although Puerto Nuevo is full of restaurants that boast this meal, La Fonda is where many locals and tourists hang out for the best version of this meal. La Fonda also offers a spectacular weekend brunch for those of you that want to have a late start to your weekend.

After having a traditional meal in Puerto Nuevo, you can savor a little bit of France in Ensenada. El Rey Sol is Mexico's oldest French restaurant that boasts a sidewalk cafe with fresh pastries for early morning risers. El Rey Sol is the place if you have a craving for escargot, French onion soup, chicken puffs with bechamel cream, duck, or crab crepes. Alternatively, you can find out the French take on Mexican food by trying some traditional chicken mole, tacos, or enchiladas. Dining at El Rey Sol is similar to enjoying the food of two different countries at once.

When your travels take you over to the east coast of Northern Baja, then visit San Felipe's El Toro restaurant that is popular with locals and tourist. This is a great place to sample some huevos rancheros otherwise known as fried eggs on a tortilla with tomatoes, onion, and green pepper sauce. If you are a fan of fish tacos then you should not be disappointed in San Felipe. Many believe that San Felipe is where fish tacos originated and you should be able to find plenty of fish taco stands on your trip. No matter what you have a hankering for, Northern Baja, Mexico has a wide array of restaurants and food stands.

Southern Baja, Mexico has a variety of restaurants available to tourists and locals. The hard part is choosing which restaurants to choose in different parts of South Baja, Mexico. Seafood seems to be a staple in almost every restaurant Baja offers, but it is not impossible to find restaurants offering traditional steaks or even Italian food. The ambiance of restaurants in Southern Baja ranges from laid-back beach style to a more upscale dining feel. No matter which mood you are in, Baja offers a restaurant to suit your tastes.

The city of Loreto offers travelers a restaurant where you can enjoy traditional steak, chicken and fish. El Nido is a Loreto steakhouse popular amongst locals and tourists. Besides steak and chicken, their menu offers quail, lobster, shrimp, and Mexican combos such as tacos, burritos, and chile pelleno. All dinners come with salad, potato, and soup. El Nido offers tourists a familiar setting and lots of great food. Cafe Ole in Loreto is a nice local place to check out for a fast, delicious breakfast. If you miss breakfast at Cafe Ole, you can always head upstairs to their partner restaurant La Terraza for seafood, steaks, and drinks.

La Paz is the capital of Southern Baja and offers a unique variety of dining options. One of the most well known restaurants for seafood is El Bismark. This restaurant does not boast a view of the ocean, but diners say it cannot be beat for fresh fish fillets and seafood cocktails. La Pazta is a great restaurant if you are looking for something besides the traditional seafood fare. La Pazta offers pasta, pizza, lasagna, ravioli, cheese fondue, and much more non-traditional Baja entrees. Nearby La Pazta is the Cafe La Pazta, which is a great place to fill up for breakfast. The cafe offers coffee, cappuccino, espresso, fruit, and breads. If you enjoy Cafe La Pazta for breakfast, make a note to return to La Pazta for an Italian dinner.

The most popular destination on Baja's southern tip is Los Cabos. Los Cabos consists of both San Jose and Cabo San Lucas. If you happen to get hungry in San Jose then stop by the El Chilar. This unique restaurant changes on a month-by-month basis as the head chef explores new ways to use Mexico's famous chile's to season mouth-watering dishes. El Chilar is said to give tourists a taste of Mexican home cooking. Another favorite is Zipper's Restaurant. Zipper's draws a beach crowd with its offerings of hamburgers and seafood. It is a great place to chow down and enjoy the beautiful view of the Costa Azul Beach.

When working up an appetite in Cabo San Lucas try Mariscos Mocambo. This is a popular joint with local fishermen and offers a laid-back atmosphere. With offerings of seafood soup, grilled fish, and shrimp empanadas, you can whet your appetite while soaking up a little local culture. Before leaving Baja, be sure to stop by the popular Cafe Santa Fe in Todos Santos. This understated Italian restaurant offers salads, soups, pastas, calzones, and more. A trip to Todos Santos should only be completed with dinner at this quaint, Italian cafe. On the other hand, a trip to the southern part of Baja, Mexico should only be completed by trying as many local eateries as possible.

Northern Baja, Mexico is home to some popular cities and towns. Tijuana, Ensenada, and Rosarito are three of the most visited areas in this northern peninsula. Knowing where comfortable accommodations are makes visiting these cities and towns so much easier. Due to the growth of Baja, Mexico it is easy to find popular chain hotels along with long-standing local hotels.

Tijuana has La Villa de Zaragoza Hotel in downtown Tijuana. This hotel is located behind the popular Jai Alai Palace and is only one block from the famous shopping and eating site of Avenida Revolucion. Their parking area boasts twenty-four hour security. They are reasonably priced and house their own restaurant and sports bar serving Mexican and international cuisine. Also in the heart of Tijuana is the Camino Real Hotel. This five-star rated hotel has a handful of restaurants and bars. The rooms are comfortably decorated and the elegant feel of this hotel is worth paying a little more than you would pay at La Villa.

If you are staying in Rosarito then you cannot go wrong with the Festival Plaza Hotel. The Festival Plaza does not have the word festival in it just because it sounds good. This hotel offers over ten clubs and restaurants including the popular Rock and Roll Taco. No popular club on Rosarito is more than three blocks from Festival Plaza. If the club scene is not your thing then enjoy a dip in Festival Plaza Hotel's pool or Jacuzzi. The pool even has a swim up bar for those that need a refill while splashing around. Festival Plaza Hotel also has many stores offering tourist items from favorite restaurants or bars. Or purchase some local flavor with homemade wares being offered in Festival's main plaza. Staying at the Festival Plaza puts you into the middle of all Rosarito's excitement and nightlife.

Estero Beach Resort is a popular four-star beachfront resort in Ensenada. Most rooms at the Estero Beach Resort have a bay or ocean view. Those that do not offer an ocean view are compensated with a view of Estero's beautifully landscaped gardens. Estero Beach Resort offers various events throughout the year. Las Terrazas is the Estero Beach Resort's resident restaurant. Las Terrazas offers seafood, sushi, traditional Mexican dishes, and a fun kid's menu. It is easy to plan fun activities through Estero Beach Resort. The resort can help you book trips for scuba diving, kayaking, fishing, horseback riding, jet skiing, and more. If you want to stay closer to the resort you can try a massage, facial, manicure, or pedicure.

There are plenty of choices for small, local hotels in the smaller towns of North Baja, but it is the larger hotels in the heart of the cities and towns that offer the most amenities. Choosing a larger, functional hotel opposed to a smaller, more rustic hotel means that you can go from beach to hotel room without needing to leave your hotel for something to do. The larger hotels seem to remain well maintained and offer visitors a little more comfort. However, if your goal is to get away from it all then any one of the numerous rustic hotels in small town Baja will be an ideal place.

If you are looking for a fun, adventurous family vacation that will help you make plenty of fond memories, then Baja, Mexico is the place to go. Spending time on one of the many beaches in Baja, Mexico will provide enough good times to last you the entire vacation. However, seeking out some more adventurous activities will help you enjoy Baja much more.

To experience the waters surrounding Baja, Mexico, a family glass bottom boat ride is in order. Glass bottom boats seat between ten to fifteen people and are found all over the southern part of Baja. A large piece of glass makes up the floor in the middle of the boat and allows for excellent viewing of underwater marine life. If you tour the waters on a clear day with high visibility, you will be awed by the numbers of colorful fish and beautiful rock formations. Many of the glass bottom boats sail by other famous landmarks in the Sea of Cortez, such as El Arco.

If your family wants even more adventure on the open water, then grab those swashbucklers and take them on a pirate ship tour. Leaving from Cabo San Lucas is Baja, Mexico's very own pirate ship. The authentic feel of this tour will have you stepping off the boat desiring to pillage towns and search for treasure. The authentic pirate crew decked out in traditional garb, and the feel of the wooden deck underneath your feet will leave you feeling like you stepped back in time. This is a great tour for kids since most children love the history of pirating. Not only will you ride a pirate ship, but you will learn of Baja, Mexico's pirate history and maybe have a chance to steer this wonderful boat.

Whale watching is a spectacular activity that most families love to do. Being out on the water with these majestic creatures is awe-inspiring and memorable. A whale-watching trip will give your family something to talk about for years to come. If you are in Baja during the months of January through April then you will have the pleasure of seeing the migrating Gray whales. If you are visiting in the summer, like most travelers, you should still be able to see some Finback whales that make their home in the Sea of Cortez.

For a traditional theme-park excursion, there is always Mundo Divertido in the northern city of Baja, Mexico, Tijuana. Mundo Divertido offers roller coasters, merry-go-rounds, swings, and more. There are also plenty of rides for smaller children to enjoy. Mundo Divertido also offers a wide selection of video games and amusement park refreshments. Tijuana is a fun place to take the family for amusements and then a little shopping.

Add a little culture to your trip with a visit to the Museum of Anthropology and History of Baja California in La Paz. The museum hosts many traveling displays that change frequently. The permanent displays showcase Aztec history, Mexican-American battles, cave paintings, clothing, and photos of pottery and weavings. This museum is definitely family-friendly with a knowledgeable, friendly staff.

Although Baja, Mexico is known for partying and good times, it boasts many family-friendly adventures. Your family can leave Baja feeling like pirates and understanding the history of Baja, Mexico. In addition, with the memories you will take away from whale watching and glass bottom boat rides you will desire to return to Baja, Mexico for your next family vacation.
